Best Lightroom Presets for Dark Skin in 2026: A Buyer's Test for Your Own Files
What are the best Lightroom presets for dark skin?
The best Lightroom preset for dark skin keeps skin colour and detail believable on your own files, across the skin depths and light you work in. If you already pay for Lightroom, start with Adobe's Premium Deep Skin presets before considering a paid pack. A "dark skin" label proves little on its own, because a standard preset applies the same "pre-defined settings" to every photo. Adobe Before you buy, judge a pack on the seller's before and after comparisons and compatibility details, then test it on your own frames once you have it.
Why a "dark skin" label proves little on its own
A standard preset cannot see the face in your frame. Adobe describes presets as pre-defined settings whose adjustments can include exposure, contrast, saturation and colour grading. Adobe The same moves land on deep brown skin by a window and on medium brown skin under a tungsten bulb. Adobe notes that a change to one colour range "affects all similar reds throughout the photo." Adobe
Dark skin is also many tones. Harvard sociologist Dr. Ellis Monk developed the 10-shade Monk Skin Tone Scale, which Google released with him in 2022. Google He says past skin tone scales did not pay attention to the variation within groups: "there's all this heterogeneity with ethnic and racial categories." Google A pack shown on one deep complexion tells you about one complexion.
The failures follow a pattern. When Google reworked its camera processing for people of colour, it gave two examples of the bias it set out to fix: "over-brightening or unnaturally desaturating skin." Google One bride told NBC News in 2022 that her skin was brightened quite a bit in her engagement photos. NBC News Another said many photographers she found on social media desaturated so heavily, in a look called "light and airy", that skin tones were distorted. NBC News A wedding photographer in the same piece said presets that lift the shadows a lot are built for lighter skin: "The tonal curve reflects lighter skin tones." NBC News
NBC reports that the "light and airy" look is meant to mimic an old film camera. NBC News Lorna Roth, professor emerita of communication studies at Concordia University, told NBC that "film chemistry was made to reflect a certain lightness." NBC News Photo labs calibrated skin tones against the "Shirley card", whose original model was a white Kodak employee. NBC News
Two companies working on this problem describe who shaped their tools. Google says it worked with photographers and significantly increased the number of portraits of people of colour in the images that train its camera. Google Adobe had its Deep Skin presets made by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, whom Adobe described in 2021 as a documentary photographer with 20 years of experience. Adobe Blog Adobe's launch post says "presets are only as good as the people creating them." Adobe Blog Who made a preset, and what it was shown on, are the two questions to put to any seller.
The buyer's checklist
Seven things to look for on a seller's page before you pay.
- Before and after comparisons. Look for the before beside the preset result, in the same frame and crop, clearly labelled. Ask whether the before is unedited and whether the after includes edits beyond the preset. A finished image alone hides what the preset changed.
- Several skin depths. Look for the same preset on more than one depth of dark skin, and on lighter skin if you photograph mixed groups. Skin tone varies widely within any group, as Monk's work shows. Google
- Several kinds of light. Look for window light indoors, daylight or open shade, and tungsten or mixed evening light. White balance reflects the colour of the light source, such as daylight, tungsten or flash. Adobe
- What the preset does to colour. Skin colour and detail should stay believable once exposure and white balance are right for the scene. HSL stands for hue, saturation and luminance, the Color Mixer sliders that shift, intensify or brighten one colour range at a time. Adobe A move to one range changes every similar colour in the frame. Adobe Inspect what a preset changes there, and do not treat small HSL numbers as a pass.
- White balance handling. The seller should say whether the preset keeps your current white balance, switches to Auto, or applies fixed values. Auto calculates white balance from the image data. Adobe A fixed value suits some light better than others.
- File format and apps. Look for XMP files for desktop, a way into Lightroom mobile, and the other apps you use listed by name. Lightroom mobile imports .xmp, .DNG and .lrtemplate preset files directly, and ZIP files must be extracted first. Adobe
- Support. Look for update terms in writing and a way to reach the people who made the pack. If a file will not import, you need someone who can answer.
Run the three-frame test on presets you own
Sellers choose their own samples, and without a trial you cannot test a paid pack on your files before you buy. Run this test on Adobe's Deep Skin presets now, and on any pack as soon as you own it. The steps use Lightroom Classic names, with the Lightroom mobile equivalent where it differs.
- Pick three recent frames in the file type you actually edit. Use one indoors by a window, one outdoors in daylight or shade, and one under tungsten or mixed evening light. Include more than one skin depth across the three if your work has it. If you edit both raw and JPEG files, test them separately.
- In Lightroom Classic, make two virtual copies of each frame. In Lightroom mobile, save the starting settings as a named version, make and save your hand correction, restore the starting settings, then apply the preset and save another version. Adobe On the first copy, correct exposure and white balance by hand, without any preset. Leave the original untouched.
- Apply the preset to the second copy at its default strength. If it has an Amount slider, start at 100; in Lightroom the slider runs from 0 to 200. Adobe In Lightroom Classic, the slider is greyed out for presets saved without Amount support. Adobe Reset to the same starting settings before you test the next preset.
- Compare the white balance mode, Temp and Tint before and after the preset. As Shot uses the camera's white balance, and Auto calculates it from the image data. Adobe A changed setting shows that the preset touches white balance. It does not tell you why its maker chose that value, so check the result against the scene.
- Open the Color Mixer and read the HSL sliders for Orange and Red. Luminance "adjusts the brightness of a color range." Adobe These numbers show what the preset changed. Point Color is a separate control in the same panel. Sample the skin with its eyedropper and tick Visualize Range to see the areas that Point Color adjustment would affect. Adobe Visualize Range does not show what the Orange or Red sliders cover.
- Compare the untouched original, your hand-corrected copy and the preset copy. In Lightroom Classic, put them side by side; in Lightroom mobile, switch between the saved versions. Check every face for unwanted lightening or darkening, lost detail, grey colour or an orange cast. Lightening and greying match the faults Google and the brides named. One Lightroom user on Adobe's forum reported darker skin turning "orangey" after brightening with exposure or shadows. Adobe Community The untouched original shows what changed, but it does not prove the person's true skin colour. Judge against the scene, and ask one question: does the person still look like themselves?
- Record the corrections each frame needs, and compare the effort with editing without the preset. Repeated problems in one kind of light are a reason to test more files from that light. Three frames can reveal problems, but they cannot prove a preset across a full gallery.
Our guide to the best Lightroom presets for wedding photography in 2026 runs a wedding version of this test, with a ceremony, a reception and a portrait frame.
Start with the baseline already inside Lightroom
If you pay for Lightroom, you already have a baseline. Adobe's Lightroom help lists Premium Presets among the features of its paid subscription. Adobe The Premium presets include a Portraits group with Deep Skin, Medium Skin and Light Skin sets. Adobe Adobe's wedding presets page counts more than 35 presets across the three. Adobe
In Lightroom, look under Premium in the Presets panel. Adobe Lightroom Classic lays out its Presets panel differently, so look for the Deep Skin group there. Adobe introduced these packs in 2021, when the Deep Skin set held 15 presets by Barrayn. Adobe Blog Premium also has an Adaptive group that "applies intelligent adjustments" for portraits. Adobe Test it the same way.
Run the three-frame test on the Deep Skin set before you buy anything, and treat it as your control. Without trial access, judge a paid pack by the seller's comparisons before you buy, then run the same test on it afterwards. A paid pack earns its price if it beats Adobe's set on your files, or saves you steps Adobe's set does not. If Adobe's presets pass on your work, keep your money.
What no preset can fix
Some problems start before the edit.
- Underexposed faces. Exposure adjustments can improve a recoverable file, but no preset can restore detail that was not recorded. Check the corrected shadows for noise and lost detail before you judge a preset's colour. Exposure for dark skin is best handled at the camera, and our guide to metering and lighting dark skin covers it.
- Two kinds of light on one face. White balance reflects the colour of the light source. Adobe A global white balance adjustment affects the whole frame. Mixed light may need local corrections, and those cannot always recover convincing colour.
- Different skin depths in one frame. Check each person after applying the preset. Use local corrections only where the result needs them; different skin depths alone do not require separate masks.
- JPEGs and phone photos. Lightroom Classic fades presets that only apply to raw files when the selected photo cannot use them. Adobe The White Balance menu offers its named options, such as Daylight and Tungsten, only for raw and DNG (Adobe's raw file format) photos. Adobe The Temp and Tint sliders work on every photo. Adobe Phone photos are not one file type, so test on the files you actually edit.
How our presets measure against the checklist
We built our presets from our own client work. Here is what our page shows and what to check yourself.
- Before and after. Our presets page shows a before and after for each collection, on photos from our own client work. As with any seller, check whether the before looks unedited and whether the after includes edits beyond the preset.
- Skin depths and light. Each before and after is on dark or brown skin, in outdoor daylight or indoor light, and three show a couple in one frame. None is lit by tungsten or mixed evening light, so test those frames yourself.
- Colour. Most of our presets make their own colour adjustments. Check what each one changes in your light with step 5 of the test.
- White balance. Most of our presets set their own white balance. Check it against your scene with step 4 of the test.
- File format and apps. The presets are XMP files for Lightroom Classic and Lightroom mobile, and they also work in Evoto and Aftershoot. If a download arrives as a ZIP file, extract it before importing on mobile. Adobe
Run the same tests on our presets as on anyone's. Test before you trust the label, ours included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there Lightroom presets made for dark skin?
Yes. Adobe's Premium Portraits group includes Deep Skin, Medium Skin and Light Skin sets. A label proves little on its own, because a standard preset applies the same pre-defined settings to every photo. Judge any pack, Adobe's included, on before and after comparisons and on your own files across several skin depths and kinds of light.
Why do presets make dark skin look orange or grey?
A standard preset moves the same sliders on every photo. Google gave over-brightening and unnaturally desaturating skin as examples of the bias it set out to fix. One Lightroom user on Adobe's forum reported darker skin turning orange after brightening. Compare the preset with your own exposure and white balance correction to see what it changed.
Do Lightroom presets work on JPEGs and phone photos?
They can, with limits. Lightroom Classic fades presets that only apply to raw files when the selected photo cannot use them. The White Balance menu's named options, such as Daylight and Tungsten, work only on raw and DNG files. The Temp and Tint sliders work on every photo. Test any pack on the file type you actually edit.
Should I use Adobe's Deep Skin presets or buy a pack?
Start with Adobe's if you already pay for Lightroom. Adobe launched its Deep Skin set in 2021 with 15 presets made by documentary photographer Laylah Amatullah Barrayn. Test it first on three of your own files: one by a window, one in daylight or shade, one under tungsten. Without trial access, judge paid packs by seller comparisons before buying.
