Free vs Paid Lightroom Presets: What Wedding Photographers Actually Need
The first preset pack most photographers download is free. That makes sense — why spend money before you know if presets fit your workflow? The problem appears three weddings later, when you realize the free pack that looked fine on a sunny portrait falls apart under reception lighting, tungsten light, deep skin tones, oily skin, and practice.
Free presets have their place. They help you understand how Lightroom presets work, experiment with different looks, and develop your taste. But for professional wedding photography, you need presets that are built for the conditions you actually shoot in.
What to look for in professional wedding presets:
1. Skin tone accuracy across diverse skin tones. Many popular presets are calibrated for lighter skin and produce unflattering results on darker complexions.
2. Consistency across lighting conditions. Your preset should look good in natural light, flash, tungsten, fluorescent, and mixed lighting.
3. Recovery latitude. Good presets should work well even when the exposure is not perfect — because at a wedding reception, it rarely is.
4. Customization options. The best preset packs include adjustment layers and profiles that let you fine-tune without starting from scratch.
